You have a story to tell, but it can be hard to say out loud or even find the words. Tears might start to well up, your throat may tighten, or you might sense a part of yourself holding back. We can begin our work together with those looming tears, with the subtle trembling you can’t seem to stop or the vague feeling that you’re not safe. Part of my approach is to find the wisdom and healing power your body possesses without digging endlessly into everything that has hurt you. Not that we won’t go there if that’s what you need – I’m on this journey with you, and you get to drive. But we’re not Thelma and Louise and we don’t have to drive off a cliff in our search for meaning.
I came to therapy in mid-life because I kept my pain private for far too long and found magic in rooms where people connected and supported each other. And I found more magic in my own marriage when I revealed the hurt person who had been hiding in plain sight. There is something so rewarding about bearing witness to a client’s Wizard of Oz moment – when they discover the strength, resiliency, or compassion that they’ve had all along; and that the misfits who have been along for the journey are their greatest source of support.
Beyond my master’s degree in counseling from Cal State Fullerton, I have sought out training in additional ways to help my clients. I am a Somatic Experiencing (SE) Practitioner-in-Training, a body-oriented model of therapy that makes sense of the ways your body holds on to trauma and helps release that hold. In addition to SE, I am trained in EMDR, so that you have a variety of paths you can choose to walk on your healing journey. I also love working with couples and am trained in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFT), which helps clients build more meaningful and deeper connections.
